"CHICKEN¹S CALL LP: In addition to a slew of other records, this is the third LP by this long running French punk band. They play fast poppy, anarchist punk with emphasis on the "punk", and the lyrics stick close to "personal is political". Some of the thick, choppy guitar hooks remind me of equal parts of PEGBOY and some of the early Fat Wreck catalog, in a weird way. This isn¹t the kind of music that usually grabs me by the throat, but I can appreciate that their anthemic choruses and soaring guitar hooks will make a room of punks go apeshit. ont évité de nous refaire une pochette à la
« what-the-fuck ? » comme sur leur premier skeud ! Je
dirais même que celle-ci est splendide ! Au niveau de la zik,
ça change pas tant que ça : toujours ce H.C. melo qui
rappel les premières heures de Propaghandi ; véloce,
frais et entraînant. Par contre, exit les petites touches punky
à la Dillinger 4, je trouve, ici ce sont deux ou trois chansons
plus ouvertement post-punk qui viennent amener une respiration.
P’têt parce que deux d’entre eux jouent aussi dans
Alarm ? En tous les cas, ça ne choque pas du tout et ça
rajoute au contraire au côté « à part »
du groupe, avec toujours ces très bonnes paroles politiques et
personnels. Un vrai skeud cohérent et (presque) complexe, que je
mettrais du temps à maîtriser je pense, mais que je vous
conseille."

just a few weeks ago. They use melodies and tunes along with energetic
crushing punk rock and create a very interesting and special brand of
style. If you look for a good record of a good band that will hopefully
stand many more of such great tours and records... you´ve found it!"

Daniel de Tofu Guerrilla/Kobayashi m`avait dit que c`était le
meilleur disque qu`il avait écouté depuis longtemps. Je
ne connaissais même pas le groupe mais maintenat, après
avoir écouté le LP trois fois, je suis un super fan! Un
melange très bien fait entre punkrock, hardcore, un peu de crust
et parfois même des passages/moments presque émos. Ce
groupe français saute entre differents styles. Voila du punk
extraordinaire avec des mélodies, chant de classe avec
variation, des textes politiques de qualité et avec une
attitude. Je crains que malheureusement ce disque ne va pas être
écouté/connu comme il devrait à cause
de l'énorme quantité de disques qui sortent en
général. Si vous cherchez un groupe/disque excellent ,
voila ! "

First off POWER IS POISON step up with three angry as hell songs that are all politics and no bullshit. Their style is really dirty hardcore that sounds like mashing CONFLICT and DISCHARGE together, but totally their own flavor. They are flat out amazing. The flipside is France’s CHICKEN’S CALL who are always a pleasure to hear. I was actually fortunate enough to be able to review another 7” of theirs a while back, and this is no less a gem. Two songs of high-energy punk with great melodies that make you want to sing along if you speak French. The guitar riffs and bass lines are well written and the drums are tasteful and clean. The production on both sides is near perfect for the sound that each band brings to the plate. By the way, the cover art is by Marald, which makes it that much sweeter." (Jake). PROFANE EXISTENCE / spring 2009 "this record pairs up two european bands that play similar style of street punk ( ndt: !!) in an unpolished yet charming way. POWER IS POISON has a more full-distortion saturated sound with a chaotic edge that is worthy of a slam dancing frenzy. Not tooo far off from a band like PUBLIC NUISANCE. CHICKEN'S CALL style is a bit more on the straight-ahead sidee of things, albeit with some slower breaks. Both bands have good vocals, which amplifies the quality of the record, although there is somewhat unoriginal riffage in parts. I would liken this split to an alcoholic energy beverage here in the usa called sparks that the new generation of crusties seems to love. It's sweet as hell and gets you fucked up and hyper, but if you drink too much it just makes you sick as shit. Yes, but all the crusties still love it. They must have been saving up because i'd qualify this ep as "good shit", and now i'm thinking, "What took'em so long?" At times this reminds me of ASTA KASK, even though i'm sure that's just the raspy, whoa-type dual vocals and fast, melodic guitar style that are pulling that reference. The songs have obviously been written with some thought to the arrangements and contain lots of dynamic breaks, tempo changes, guitar texture, and catchy solos. "CHICKEN'S CALL Maintenant ou Jemais 10" I guess this band has been around for about 9 years now but this is only their second release, and it's a one-sided 10" with an elaborately painted flipside. Way elaborate packaging, silkscreened cover. Seems kind of excessive and the virtual waste of one side makes it kind of odd. “Parlons ici de leur 10’’, maintenant ou jamais, sorti sur des chouettes labels comme “perce oreille” ou “acclaim”. Rien qu’a l’objet disque, on sait que la passion, la détermination, et l’envie sont au rendez vous. C’est un 10’’ une face rose, superbement sérigraphié sur la face non-gravée, et ce enveloppé dans une pochette sérigraphiée elle aussi ! Le disque est accompagné d’un zine avec paroles, textes, explications, tout mis en page a la main, comme on les aime. On peut difficilement émettre le moindre reproche de ce coté la puisque la réussite est totale. D’ailleurs, on peut de la même manière difficilement critiquer la musique !! Leur anarcho-punk-hardcore chanté en français est d’une fraicheur, d’un entrain, d’une énergie telle que l’on ne peut qu’être comblé lorsque les 4 titres sont crachés par nos enceintes ! En ce qui me concerne, « fuite », génération désabusée », « terre promise » et « maintenant ou jamais » sont les morceaux ayant le plus tourné en cette fin d’année, me mettant d’aplomb et de bonne humeur tous le matins ! Mais là ou ce disque te donne le plus d’espoir, selon moi, est lorsque tu entame la lecture des paroles. Je leur laisserai la parole pour clôturer cette chronique « réclame ta vie, tes rêves, ta liberté, c’est maintenant ou jamais ! »

"J'avais vu ce groupe en concert il y a quelques années dans un squat lyonnais, et j'en avais gardé un super souvenir. Je suis tout aussi impressionné à l'écoute de leur premier EP, 4 titres de punk-hardcore qui font un peu penser à Aside (sans le chant mixte), avec un chant assez clair et des chœurs plus variés, ou à Tromatism pour les parties plus phrasées. La zique est parfaitement construite, sans partir dans des expérimentations approximatives (comprenez "métal", comme ça se fait beaucoup actuellement dans la scène punk-hardcore), et les textes (sur les fachos aux élections de 2002 - avec lecture d'un texte de Durruti en fin de morceau-, le sexisme, l'obsession sécuritaire) sont plus que du remplissage en fonction des thèmes établis, mais une véritable volonté d'apporter quelque chose, comme l'explicite le texte qui figure sur la pochette, et comme le montre le fait de choisir de chanter en français, ou de distribuer les textes lors des concerts, initiative régulièrement voués à tomber à plat en fonction du public du concert."
